Deduced the balance existing in the different river ecosystems having present the pH determinated and knowing the buffer system and the stechiometry relation (CO3H-)/(CO3H2), we correlated the pH with total alkalinity ( TAC ) measured as (CO3=), because this give us an indirect measure of the vuffer ability of the system. The water samples were taken in a time of not growing, in polyethylene containers, and the pH were determinated at 20ºC. The total alkalinity ( TAC ) was valued with HCI solution 0,1122 N, using methyl orange as indicator and it was calculated as (CO3=). The rivers studied were of the Valley, Ravine and Puna zones, Valle Grande and the rivers La Almona, El Morado and Paños (San Antonio department). We have got a lineal equation like pH = 7,233 + 0,143 x Total Alkalinity, and in the case of variation of pH with osmolarity: pH = 7,218 + 0,02 x Osmolarity, which let us correlate the pH of a system with its osmolarity or total alkalinity in zones of pH velow 8,3. The pH in the 99 (por ciento) of de rivers was below 8,3; that's means that the relation (CO3=) / (CO3H) is less than 1/100, considering the second constant of CO3H2 at 25ºC, pK2 which is 10,25; because of this, most of the total alkalinity was owing to CO3H- and free alkali, which gave us the buffer ability of the system in an indirect form. .
