The finding of two original letters written by Florentino Ameghino to Hermann von Ihering, permitted to identity a possible marine fossil locality of Miocene age along the cliffs of Río Grande de Jujuy. The feasibility of the true existence of this fossil locality is judged through the analysis of the extension and age of the Paranense sea. This marine transgression is coeval with the deposits of the Amazon Sea. Both reflect tectonic-loading subsidence of the Andean forelad related to important Miocene shortening. The concidence of this shortening with the 12 Ma high stand of sea level controlled the marine flooding of most the South America foreland basins. Relevamiento: 1995.
